Steeped in history, there are several locations in both North and South Carolina that have earned Historic Hotels of America recognition. The owners have carefully preserved their property to continue those traditions for years to come.
Weighing in at the Gold level is the Pinehurst Resort. Although the town of Pinehurst is now considered “The Home of American Golf” you may be surprised that James Walker Tufts never even heard of golf when he visualized and founded the Village and built the Holly Inn in 1895. He wanted to create a retreat from the northern winters and the ills of industrialization with an emphasis on healthy outdoor activities and plenty of rest and relaxation. Today the resort includes the original Holly Inn, the Carolina Inn, The Manor, Villas, tennis and croquet courts, pool, spa and, of course, some of the most famous golf courses in the country.
